J'Nan Brown
Biography
- An advocate for women’s rights since the mid 1960s when living in the U.S. where she was involved with the League of Women Voters
- Returning to Canada in 1970, became a member of the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL) and has continued that involvement in PEI
- Has served on numerous committees involved with women’s issues, including two steering committees of Women’s Network PEI, one of which was an initiative “Women in Politics”
- Invited in 2005 and 2006 by the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women to represent the Island New Democrats on a “Women in Government” steering committee that examined barriers faced by women considering a role in government
- Involved from the beginning with an organization called “Every Vote Counts”, encouraging change towards a proportional voting system, leading to her election in 2003 to the Board of the National Council of Fair Vote Canada
- Served on an NDP Federal Council committee appointed to determine a model of proportional representation to recommend to the January 2003 NDP Convention
- Appointed by the Island New Democrats in 2005 to serve on the Provincial Commission on Prince Edward Island’s Electoral Future
- Worked with the “Yes” Coalition prior to the PEI referendum on electoral reform in 2005
- Ran for the Island New Democrats in 1996 in her home district of Crapaud-Hazelgrove, in 2003 in Charlottetown-Rochford Square, and in 2006 in a by-election in Morell-Fortune Bay
- Resident of Prince Edward Island since 1977
- Married to Kirk Brown — they have two adult children and two adult grandchildren
- Lives on a farm in Clyde River
